DISASTER PREPAREDNESS

United Way of Johnson & Washington Counties is there for neighbors

before, during and after a disaster.

Responding to our community in times of crisis is a critical role United Way plays to help people. United Way is uniquely positioned to provide on-the-ground disaster response, including raising funds; mobilizing volunteers; and engaging local partners to ensure community stability.

Community Disaster Relief Fund

Established in 2006 in the response to the Iowa City tornado, United Way raises funds to support the needs of individuals and famililes impacted by disaster.

Emergency Volunteer Center

Established in 2008, the Emergency Volunteer Center mobilizes trained volunteers to coordinate spontaneous volunteers to meet community needs for disaster response and recovery. The Emergency Volunteer Center is activated by Emergency Management in times of disaster.

Johnson County Community Organizations Active in Disaster (JC COAD)

Established in 2008, United Way convened the Johnson County COAD as a local network of service agencies, faith-based organizations, local businesses and local government representatives that are invovled in community disaster preparedness and in the aftermath of disaster. The team works together sharing information and resources to meet the needs of the community. Meetings are held twice a year unless an emergency need arrises due to a disaster related event.
