United Way of Johnson & Washington Counties plays a key leadership role in local disaster response and recovery efforts through the Community Organizations Active in Disaster (COAD). In partnership with nonprofits, businesses, foundations, emergency response agencies, and community donors, United Way helps coordinate resources, emergency assistance, and long-term recovery support for individuals and families impacted by disasters in our region.

Through the Disaster Relief Fund, resources can be rapidly deployed to provide immediate relief such as temporary housing, basic needs support, and coordinated recovery services for vulnerable households facing crisis situations like fires, severe weather, and other community emergencies.

*Past events supported by the Disaster Relief Fund:
26 individuals were impacted by the Coralville apartment fire on April 9th, 2025. Through United Way’s leadership with the Community Organizations Active in Disaster (COAD), a stable system of support is in place for each person at this time. For more on the fire situation, you can see the story from KGAN.
